Or should 4 wheel drive only be engaged when you are driving in conditions that warrant it? Does a vehicle get less gas mileage when 4 wheel drive is being used?

it is not so much bad as it just uses more gas. a vehicle made for 4 wheel drive that is all time is built for it, where as a vehicle that is 2 wheel drive with 4 wheel options. is built for a full time running of the 4 wheel drive. if you have the option, put it in 2 wheel until 4 wheel is needed.

Some cars are AWD and they are made to move four wheel drive all the time. However, if your car has the regular 2WD option then you should not use the 4WD all the time or you might hurt your car. Each 4WD status (High or Low) should be used when necessary and not all the time.

The easiest thing I can advise is that you check your car instructions book for more details.

4wd should only be engaged when the conditions warrant it. You can really screw up the truck if you keep it on all the time. Also, only used 4wd when needed. The gas mileage plummets when you use 4wd.

Its normal that it clunked, but you don't want it to. You should disengage 4x4 when you don't need it. When your on the road and 4x4 is engaged it is difficult to turn cause usually all the wheels are locked to spin at the same speed, when you corner the outside tire need to spin faster, but cant with 4x4 engaged. Also 4x4 makes it more difficult to turn and widens your turning radius. When your in the mud its easy for the tires to spin, so when turning in mud with 4x4 you wouldnt get that noise cause the wheels can spin and loose traction, where as on the hard roads, its harder for the wheels to spin cause they have traction so it pop or creaks like said.

It's a quick killer of your transmission, you get much worse gas mileage than 2w drive, and it's generally harder to control the vehicle (steering, especially in wet conditions, gets much worse).
