IF the Yankees make a few trades they may, and I mean MAYBE have a shot.
A) Latest rumors put Dontelle Willis for Robbie Cano/Philip Hughes a possibility. With Willis that gives us a decent rotation to go into the home stretch (in order of strength 1) Moose 2) Willis 3) Wang 4) Johnson 5) Wright.
B) IF Philly bails out and dumps payroll (like the other BIG rumor goes) the Yankees (due to the fact they can afford it) may wind up with both Abreu and Gordon. This would not only give us strength in the Bull-pen, but it will replace one of those RBI producers we have been missing.
If either of these things go down we have a shot (a 3 game lead in July is Nothing) but I do agree the WC is coming out of the Central, so win the east or start the off season.
Take care enjoyed the question.

It will be difficult this year but I think they can pass the Red Sox. The Sox have been relatively healthy and the Yankees have not and still the Sox can't pull away. Sheffield and Matzui will be back in a month and if they can pick up a starter by the trading deadline (like a Smotlz who is looking to move on) and given their lineup I think they can win the AL East again!! By the way, I AM a Yankee fan.

Yankees will not make the playoffs this year. The reasons:
1} Lack of starting pitching. This has caused the bullpen to be overused and worn down at the end of the season. Joe Torre uses his relievers until their arms fall off. This is why they have not done well in the playoffs in the last few years.
2} Injuries. I hate to say it but injuries to matsui and sheffield have really hurt the yanks this year. Listening to the average yankee fan however, you would think that all 25 players have been on the dl all year long.
3} AROD AROD AROD AROD. AROD AROD has been a cancer on every team he has been on, Seattle and Texas have done better after he left.

No, they will not make the playoffs. The Red Sox will win the division, and Chicago or Detroit will be the wild card. The Yankees have aged and they are no longer the dominant force they were in the past. Yankee fans keep pointing to their past successes, but that does not win championships today!!
Go Red Sox!!

Yes, they will make the playoffs.
1. They will get innings out of Dotel which will allow Torre to drop Farnsworth into a less pressurized role.
2.They will continue to produce offensively. Cashman will undoubtedly acquire an outfielder although I wouldn't try to speculate as to whom they will pursue. I think some will push for Soriano, but Torre must realize that his numbers are a but hollow and he certainly has been exposed in the playoffs.
3. The Red Sox bullpen will falter. Papelbon has been exceeding expectations for months and I think he will come back to earth. Injuries will affect the Red Sox lineup at some point. The loss of Ortiz or Ramirez would devastate the Boston offense.

My Yankees will make the playoffs, no doubt. And the Red Sox will win the wild card. Again. The Yanks always come through in September.

The Yankees will not win the division. They will finish 2nd to the Red Sox. The wild card looks like it is coming from the Central.

If they keep playing the way they are playing and Boston continues doing very well this season they have a very good chance at being the wild card. The Red Sox are my favorite team, and I'm afraid that the Red Sox will go into decline, like they have been doing most recent years, after the All Star game.

They won't make it this year. The pitching isn't deep enough. Johnson is still good at his age, but less consistent and started real slow. Yanks got nobody to pitch between the sixth inning and the 9th, so heaven forbid that their starters have a rough day.
That's in addition to the injuries that have affected some of their better position players.
Tigers and White Sox are two spots, the East only gets one this year. Oh happy day!

only a stupid yankee fan will say yes, a real baseball fan will say no, the red sox will take the division as they have proven so far this year, and the wild card will come from the AL central, i think the Tigers will drop to that and the White Sox will take over the division.
