You can if you have archiving enabled for messenger. To check, have your messenger program up, and at the top clikc Messenger, then go down to Preferences. I window will come up, and on the left side you will see a list, Archive is the 4th from teh top, click it, and then look on the right side at the top and see if the dot is next to Yes, save all my messages. If you have message archiving enabled in your messenger, then all you have to do is right click on the person's name who sent it, and then click on message archive, wait for the window to come up and it should have the last messages they sent you. However, if you have archiving disabled, then you can't recover it.

Depends on what messenger you are using. Most of the time on yahoo it will be in your message archives.
