Honestly speaking, this is a question that I have been asking myself for quite sometime now, and you should too. Are there players out there that REALLY stand out from the others? I don't think so. And I have got a pretty good reason. Please have patience and read on...
In the days of yore when football players were amateurs and were paid miniscule salaries, football was more of a sport than a business or occupation. The players played for fun, the fans watched matches for laid-back entertainment. Because the game wasn't about the dough (money), the players played freely and weren't that much concerned about physical fitness. This resulted in open, beautiful play and made some players really stand out (i.e Pele, Garrincha, Zico and countless others): players that were said to be the BEST. Why shouldn't they be? Have you seen archive footage of old World Cup matches? I have, and I can tell you, the goals were terrific and all, but one major factor stood out. Notoriously bad defending!!! The defending was terrible!! This was because the play was most of the time open and almost always because the defenders lacked the necessary skills and physical fitness necessary to perform well. This tracks back to them being amateur players - factory workers (or office workers) during weekdays and footballers during the weekends.
But starting in the early 70s, football became more commercialized and globalized, with the advent of the professional players. Players who played football as a full-time occupation. This resulted in stiffer and stiffer defences, although Maradona survived ironclad European defences upto the early 1990s, and he is, by my standards, one of the last BEST players ever. After the 1990s, football became a real commercial outfit, with players being sold and signed for astronomical amounts and clubs investing more and more on infrastructure. This puts more and more pressure on teams to perform well, and one way to do that is not to concede goals. Thus, defences have been stronger than ever before, making players who really stand out rarely appear.
So, that is a brief explanantion on why I think there are no BEST players in the World Cup today. If you want to know my opinion on best GOAL scorers, I think Klose is the best. Ronaldinho makes the best passes. And I believe England will win the Cup. Go England!!

um Ronaldinho is good and has changed his style of play totally for the world cup but right now ronaldo and Klose are two very dangerous goal scorers. so it is a toss up between those three depending on your style of play and preference
