The blues, Davis, Dylan, Robert Johnson, DeNiro, Pacino, Hoffman. There's substance, but isn't there is a lot of narcissism too.

Politically, US foreign policy strikes many around the world as adolescent and American's unquestioning belief in American values as a. naive and b. the result of a lack of any deep understanding of other cultures.
from where other cultures stand American patriotism is often overkill (no pun). So much about freedom and democracy and flag waving and bald headed eagles and stars and stripes. What other countries shout so loudly (except in the world cup) and what would you think of them if they did. What other regimes have paid such attention to flags and national symbols (no fascism rants please, though qualified contrasts and comparisons ok).
Objectively, is this totemic and tribal?
As for everybody wanting to come to /be like America - , immigration in to australia or western europe is largely financial, isn't this the case with much migration

Kathy, you haven't answered my question. you'd wave your flag in my face, I wouldn't do likewise though I have a deep love of the place I'm from. Most people love their place, that's not at issue

csme - not suggesting you need to act like a muslim- though implicit in that comment is that such would be unamerican! Clearly there are muslim americans.

My question is about taking rousing patriotism with a grain of salt.

I'd wave my flag in your face, but this is the internet so that isn't quite possible.

I see nothing wrong with the pride we have in our country, a young country at that. We've accomplished quite a bit in just over a couple hundred years don't you think?

I don't think it is over kill at all. Especially in war time. There is nothing wrong with being proud of where you come from. Other cultures do other things. Just because the U.S. wants to show it's pride and support it's way of life doesn't make it over kill. Just because Muslims pray 5 times a day does that mean I have to. It's part of who we are should we change again to be more like other countries? If we are supposed to except their culture why don't they have to except ours?

I never implied that it was unamerican to act like a Muslim. As you say there are truly Muslim Americans. My point is mealy that Other cultures have their way of thinking that yes may go back thousands of years and are deeply en grained in the culture. I guess what I am trying to say is that if I wave a flag it's because I believe in this country and what it stands for. It doesn't matter to me what other countries think I'm not doing for them or to be against them I do it for me. Anyone can take it with a grain of salt. I can only speak for myself, I don't take it lightly. Yes the U.S. is a new country in relation to most others but and maybe we do beat our chest a little louder but the preamble to the Constitution reminds me of where we came from and that we have alot to be proud of. Hey just my opinion but thanks for the question. and the civility
