Please only respond if you have stayed at one, and especially reply if you've stayed at a German one as that's where I am considering a hostel stay. Any additional helpful advice/opinions about hostels?

Hostels are used by tens of thousands of people every day. You are in luck, because in Germany hostels tend to be very clean and very nice. There is an article that raises the same question that you have about hostels and their safety it sounds like it can answer your question. Link below.

In college, I had the opportunity to go to Europe and travel for the month of January. We stayed at Hostels in Paris, Luxembourg, Brussels, and Amsterdam. They were all perfectly safe. It is recommended you bring a lock so that you can lock up your stuff, but other than that, its pretty low key. European cities tend to be a lot safer than American cities. One friend had her camera pick-pocketed in London, but that was during the New Years Eve celebration, and people were packed kinda tight. Other than that, we were able to walk around late at night and have no issues. We never once had a problem with any of our hostels.

Have fun on your trip!

Not always. You should be able to check out the reputation of the one you are planning to stay at by going to official tourist websites. I made the mistake of staying in one in in Cordoba (Spain) last year. My two teeanaged kids were with me. It was the worst night of our lives. It was hot and the whole place seemed terribly insecure to me. A group of guests got locked out because they came back after 12. The owner of the hostel refused to get up and open the door. We checked out as soon as it was morning.

I advise you to visit official websites of the country you propose to visit. You can read comments by people who have travelled to that place and this will help you to choose your accomodation. Be prepared for the worst. Don't carry too much money on your person.

I stayed in one in Peru and it was safe. Keep your id's, passport, and money in a safe place.
