I want to become an online journalist - I need some tips on how to get opportunities in editing, writing reviews and features and getting myself published. This will enable me to show potential employers that I can write.

Well, what you could do in the meantime when you DON'T have an "opportunity" is to just do it freestyle yourself. Write mock reviews or features and add them to your portfolio.

To get actual experience, I would just contact local newspapers and/or websites and find the appropriate person to e-mail and ask if they need any extra writers. Even though you want to be an online journalist, writing is the same whether it's online or on the internet so if you get an opportunity out of the web I would take that just the same if you really want to build your portfolio, and then keep pursuing your other opportunities. The rule for building portfolios of any kind is to just keep doing the craft whenever and wherever you can.

Good luck! And here is a REALLY good article about the future in online journalism: http://www.ojr.org/ojr/stories/060316moor/

Write about the subjects you know. Three paragraphs, beginning, middle and end, no more than 400 to 500 words. Editing? make sure you can read, write and spell better than your audience. Anybody can put dumb stuff on the web, there's a lot of it. Make sure that yours is the best. Check with a web site designer and see if there is a text format like Yahoo Photos gallery. Good luck.

Why start on line? The local papers which cover events in your area love sports reports from schools, clubs etc if they can get a photo of the team all the better, (it helps to sell papers). Once you have established a by line there (your name published) put the reports on line too, with a local news web site. That way you have 2 media strikes. You may not like sport, but it is good training for spelling names correctly, noting times etc. all of which will increase your accuracy as a writer. Think of it as a mental gym. Once you have worked up a few post them on a blog at blog.com and keep your fingers crossed. You can always give people your on line address for them to look themselves up and get your hit rate up.

You can try and get a work experience place at - for instance - a local newspaper. You can start a blow on which you comment on the news.
There are several ways, but most of all you just need some luck.

Do you have any quals?? if so i'd start by taliking to colleges or look on Monster jobs.

If not you should get at least a city n guilds and then people will take your work seriously rather than just as a hobby which it obviously isn't

Look for a local weekly paper that you can write for either for just the experience, or they can pay you per story or word.

Do an internship with your local daily paper. It will get you experience and get your foot in the door with the staff there.

Offer your services to local nonprofit organizations to assist them with writing and placing press releases.
