Fortunately, with the subway in London, you can get wherever you want to go very quickly. One thing to consider is that hotels which are close to the tourist areas are going to be expensive.

I stayed at a Bed and Breakfast not far from Gatwick Airport and took the train into the city every day. I spent $45/night and that included the B&B owner driving me to the train station.

The Piccadilly area is always good. Basically the closer to the center you are the more activities that will be at your disposal(Changing Of The Guard is a good example). But at the same time, it also depends on what your interests are. Also--

1- For how long?
2- What is your budget?
3- Any criteria for the Hotel that you want to stay at.
