Great answers so far, someone asked "Why the question?" To me, it is simply because so many see things of importance so differently, and while there is of course no absolute answer, the question does get your mind moving

Difficult question: Some would say the television, because it gives us a view of the world in an instant. But I believe the automobile, because it made us a mobile society, able to travel for work or leisure.

Computers

simply because it allows you to find information on just about anything you would be interested, it allows you to view movies and listen to music, it allows you to stay in touch with family and friends along with making new friends.... and it provides directions if you need them..... plus it serves as a phone when you need it to,....

So lets see

Transportaion (booking of travel along with directions)
Phone
Television
DVD Player
Radio/Stereoand the almoghty post offcie (with allowing email instead of having to use snail mail)

I am sure if I seriously thought about this a bit longer we could make this list much much longer

The modern, dependable automobile, and good roads.

It has given us freedom of travel like never before. Many people dearly love their cars. It is a mobile status symbol. A computer just doesn't have 'sex appeal' like a sports car does. Autos take us to work, to the city and to places unknown.

Gold. It has been around and coveted since before Christ. It has been the cause of wars, deaths by the millions and corruption for thousands of years. I would say it alone is the original basis for greed.
