Actually it seems as though when they invented american football they were just not clever enough to come up with their own name so they stole the name of a game already in existence. The better question is why did they change football to soccer so that they could call a new game football.

Soccer was originally called football.....and it's called football just about everywhere else in the world.. but it was the Americans that changed the name of it to soccor... who the hell knows why... and then they developed their own version of football.. which really is more like rugby except football is more of a wimps sport whereas rugby is rugged.
