Serpentine Belt bad

2006-06-29 09:36:33 · answer #1 · answered by Anonymous · 1 0

could be a number of things. inspect the belt for cracks, glazing, fraying, oil or coolant on the belt, etc. if these are detected, replace it and any other part that may be causing the noise (especially fluid leaks...don't want the new belt to go bad right away, do ya?). if it looks ok, try spraying it with WD40 or belt dressing. it may just be dry. this may take several applications before the squeel goes away. no WD40 handy? try a bar of soap. if these fail, check the belt tensioner for proper tension. the spring may be getting weak and allowing the belt to slip. if it doesn't have a belt tensioner, adjust the belt accordingly. if all these attempts fail, then something else may be the cause like a loose alternator or a/c bracket. an idler pulley can make the same noise as well. good luck! and be careful...many a person has lost a finger fiddling with belts when the engine is running.

Squeaking means slipping. Turning on the A/C adds to the load on the belt. If the belt is more than two years old, replace it. If there is any evidence of wear, cracks, inside surface is damaged or discolored; replace it.
If the belt is in good shape, as far as you can determine, It may just need tightening.

The squeal & vibration ensue at the same time as the compressor engages - which exhibits a difficulty with the belt or the compressor. verify the rigidity on the belt - because it has already fallen off before, the belt is positively free. If that would not restoration the priority, you'll favor to deliver it to a mechanic - the compressor grab will be binding - that would want to reason the belt to stretch or snap.

Better to replace, but the belt may be fine. The belt is loose.
You can tighten with a 5/8's wrench. Easy.

Depending on how old your car is, you either have a separate belt for your a/c or you have one big long belt called a Serpentine belt that runs everything. Your belt is either loose or worn out if it is squeeking like that. Get it check and replaced right away. If it is a serpentine belt and it breaks, it can destroy your whole engine.

Time to replace the belt. Sometimes easy sometimes not easy. If your not mechanically inclined I suggest finding a mechanic in your area to replace it.

Can be other things as well, if you haven't kept up with normal maintenance. Compressor could be sticking, forcing the belt to slip on start up.

But more than likely it's just an old belt.

The belt may just need an adjustment, although if you are running low on freon, which cools the A/C AND lubricates the compressor, your compressor needs recharged. Check the belt first, then see if you need a recharge.
