Because it alienates the rest of the citizens in the country that don't believe in God. Since this is not a theocracy, the words "under God" don't belong there.

It's as bad as George Bush Sr. saying that he doesn't consider atheists to be real citizens, or the sickening amount of xenophobia that our country as a whole shows to those of other cultures in the wake of 9/11.

Freedom of religion... exactly what makes this a great nation. The United States is a big melting pot belonging to all cultures, customs, ethnic origins. There are immigrants that do believe in God too, and then there are people who have lived her in the US for decades that don't have a religion as well, so it's not just the immigrants or whatever that are changing things....I don't see the big deal with taking it off...

I have a United states Penny dated 1809. It does not have "In God In Trust" on it. So I agree. Whats the big deal?
Before the mint added that phrase, was God not blessing the United States?
Before 1954, were we NOT one nation under God, when we said the Pledge of allegiance?
Most people are really stupid, if they thin removing those phrases will hurt the United States. We did well for 150 years without them

The phrase "Under God" was added to the pledge during the Cold War to distinguish us from Communist Russia. So I don't think it should be a big deal that we take it off. I, as a Christian (though not a particularly devout one), find it offensive that the phrasing was used for a political purpose in the first place.

The big deal is that our entire country and its government was founded on Christianity and all the immigrants are coming and claiming it's prejudice againts their religions. AT LEAST THEY HAVE FREEDOM OF RELIGION HERE! They should not be able to come to our country and change something that our founding fathers have set in stone!

Why should we? Our nation was founded that way. If others don't like it, they can go live somewhere else! It's on our money too! Everyone knew before they came here how our country was founded. LOVE IT OR LEAVE IT

Separation of church and state means the government just stays out of religion they don't clean it up or fix it up. the founding fathers believed in a higher authority, taking it away would just show how we are really pulling away from the constitution, and our foundation
