Yes I have been through the same thing. I am native american and that culture is dying fast. I tried for years to keep with that culture and I came to realize that my whole life I had a culture, And the native american culture wasn't it. It was the american culture that I was presently immersed in. I realized I was searching for something I already had. My suggestion is make your own culture and be yourself.

People who where born before the Islamic Revolution naturally think of themselves as Persians. Persia does indeed have a proud and ancient tradition. If you want to hang out with people who consider themselves to be Iranian, you'll have better luck with the younger crowd. As far as being materialistic goes, look around, dude. Where are you?

I have Irish-Scottish background (I was told), but I certainly have no interest in that background. Nor can I see any reason to be proud of that background. Who cares? I am where I am, and I am what I am. Anything else is superfluous.

Be proud but not fanatical about it. It can only get you into trouble as does all arrogance.
