Plumber today informed me after an hour that a water pump in my basement that works in conjunction only with a bathroom in that area, needs to be replaced. The problem is that the original installer of that pump did not use piping that has sections and now, when the pump is removed water (exact quantity unknown) will spill onto the carpeted floor...the plumber mentioned placing plastic on the floor; however, I would like to know if there is a product that absorbs liquids that spill, similar to a sponge???I need to purchase same before any work is done...

Invest in a ~20 gallon wet-dry vac. In addition to whatever other remedies that you have standing by, you can begin to suck up anything that hits the carpet.

Don't know of a specific product that would absorb it, but we drilled a hole close to where the old pump had to be removed and let the water drain into a big plastic garbage can. Hopefully your pipes are angled correctly and that will work for you as well.

What about a kid's swimming pool. It would be cheap and there is no really great product for soaking up water.
