Both have already had their Golden Age.

For Islam, it was the 7th century.
For Western, it was the 20th.

There is no islamic civilization, much of the middle east is religously and linguistically diverse and has been since the 7th century. Indonesia contains the largest percentage of Muslims in the world today. Christians, nomads, Jews, Musloms have lived side by side for centuries. The christians and jews may have had to pay higher taxes however they were kept around as sort of loan sharks because charging interest was unacceptable in early muslim religion or how it was literally stated by the ullamma and possibly the Q'uran. Historically speaking, western civilization did not prosper on a global scale in a sense without the muslim conquests of spain and etc due to the technological innovations which were spread as well as commodities which shaped the lifestyles of the peoples of Europe during the muslim reign of power. Both Christianity and Islam in a sense were cults, they were in response and against the mainstream religiosities at the time of their divinations so I see similarities in the two. However, Islam was the dominant economic power prior to europes use of the Americas. Muslim traders went farther with the monsoon winds and had connection with parts of africa such as mogodishu, indonesia, and china way before the europeans. So when you hear about the sick man of Europe, its really rediculous if we take our history a little bit farther back.....if the bubonic plague would have been a little bit closer to europe we may never have seen the west as the west or the islamic civilization as the inferior...etc....and the answer below is insane...when the spanish came to americas it was not peaceful, they used christianity to justify their "new world" take overs with force....i mean they roasted, hunted, and enslaved indians...the west that is....i dont see that as peaceful by any means

The main difference I can think of is that Islam was spread primarily through military conquest whereas Western Civilization was based on Christianity which was primarily spread through evangelism, peacefully. The bloody history of Islam is well documented and really cannot be ignored. Were there abuses of Christianity as well? The Spanish Inquisition and the plight of the French Protestants were but they were the exception rather than the rule.
The most logical conclusion is that while Islam has its devoted followers, there hasn't been any real human progress attributable to Islam. Western Civilization has given more people more freedom and opportunity and relieved more poverty and human suffering than any other civilization in history.
