like anything else... that depends on the individual. Note.. I said individual, not gender... I spent some time as a department store maintenance man, and I can tell you just as many horror stories about the ladies restroom, as any about men.
My contract crews always cleaned up after themselves. Even vacuumed the carpets every day we were in a home. We had our meals away from the site, and used the toilet facilities at a restaraunt, or at our hotel, rather than the homeowners. I didn't allow those who did, of my crew, to smoke on site either, even if the homeowners did. We covered up things with plastic, to prevent them from getting dirty, etc. At the end of the day, we took all of our trash with us, and, as I said, vacuumed the carpets.
A sloppy craftsman, is a poor craftsman.... If I were you, I would seriously think about hiring someone else to do the work. If they don't take enough pride in their work to take care of their work environment....you don't want them working on your home. Same attitude could apply to a manufacturing, or office workspace.... clutter and a dirty environment hinder production.
