An epiphany (sp?) is when you have a sudden un-rationalized realization of why something is, or how something works, or a better idea for something etc...

Often you are doing something completely irrelevant (like sitting on the pot) and you go, "AH HA! If I were to go the other way around the block I would save a mile on my commute every morning and avoid the traffic."

That's a mundane example but it works.
