Naw, somebody's just shining you on. Al astrophysics aside, just remember that since you are closer to the top of the globe, the sun gets a longer shot at you in the summer giving you longer days - in the middle of summer; you are pointed more away from the sun in the winter, which has the rest of the top end of the earth between you and the sun, giving you more hours in darkness and shorter days in the middle of winter.

If this doesn't seem clear, take an orange or styrofoam ball and stick a pencil right through it. spin or rotate it in your fingers - if you think for a second, you'll see you have a model of the earth spinning in space. Now, tilt it over a little and keep turning it. Bring it closer or farther to a good lamp or flashlight until you can see the shadow it casts on the backside of the globe. You can now more clearly in your mind - that if: in the winter, more hours in the dark; pointed toward the sun in summer, more hours in daylight.

Life is great there, if want to get away from the lower Forty-Eight and still have a 21st century life. In the cities, it's just like living in Minnesota - ask any one of a million soldiers and wives who've lived there in the last 50 years. In the small towns and countryside, it goes from just like a small town to just great and fantastic in the countryside - and much better when you get out in the bush. God must have used a bigger paintbrush when he made Alaska - if you don't believe in a god, don't go out into the bush, 'cuase you will when you come back. It IS majestic.

Have fun.

Depends on where you live in AK. Where I live, in the winter the sun does not rise until 10:00ish and it is out for a few hours. The sun really f%$# up you sleeping habits in the summer because even though the sun isn't shining on you, it is still light outside. I used to live in Montana, the climate/vegetation is not much different. If you are planning on moving here, Homer and Anchorage are the two places I would recommend!
