Why can someone be tried as an adult when the law clearly defines them as a child in all other respects?

Why is the age of consent in Canada fourteen, while it ranges from twelve in some sections of the United States to eighteen in others?

What is it that makes someone capable of getting behind the wheel of a four thousand pound car and knowing how to safely and responsibly handle such a dangerous machine, but incapacitates them to having a single voice among millions about who is the best qualified to lead us for another two years after that in most parts of the country?

How come you can become a United States Representative at twenty-five, a United States Senator at thirty, but not Vice President or President until you're thirty-five... and why hasn't it occurred to people that the order of succession can place a man in the position of inheriting the office of President before being old enough to be elected to office in the Senate?

And for that matter, why do so many people write profiles online which say things like "I'm just looking for honest, genuine people who are open to all the possibilities and want to get to know me... I'm very open minded and will give everyone a chance... no one over 30"?

Other people may have different answers, but I'm going to say it's because people are very arbitrary about age and, as much as many people will decry this fact vehemently, really aren't competent to make social decisions based on the reality of the situation. So, most often we take the easy road out, pull a number out of our butts, slap that on the law, and move on with life. Like so many arbitrary things people do, the logic usually doesn't sync up, but most people would be shot in the head before admitting that's the way it is, so that's the way it continues to be.

That question was answered in the 70's. Some states legalised drinking at 18 and reversed it after much damage to businesses and puplic out cry. Some state allowed "near beer" 3.2% alc. I don't think any states still allow full drinking rights under 21. Germany lets any one drink and they seem to handle it. Maybe culture differences are a contributing factor.

Because back in the 1980s a Democratic House of Representatives a Republican Senate and a Republican President (the infamous Ronald Reagan to be exact) decided to withhold 5% states' Federal highway grants if they did not raise their drinking ages to 21. Every state sold out and raised their drinking ages to 21.

Because he's not really a man at 18. Still just a kid and kids can't handle alcohol. Learn to drive. Learn how to vote responsibly. Hell, even join the military. Then learn how to hold your liquor and quit crying about it.

It depends on which state hi lives in, but yes in most states.
He must register for the draft...He can join the military and carry a gun and kill women and children and be prosecuted for it, even if ordered to do it. Yet he cannot buy a gun if he is a civilian Geta concealed carry permit if he is a civilian. If in the military he cannot legally buy alcohol on or off base.
