If you like folk lore, Merlin-esque magic and grand special effects that can only truely be apreciated on a large screen, then yes. It's like a roller coaster ride at times. If you've already read the books you might be a little disappointed. It's really the special effects and cinimatography that make the trilogy on screen. The story is there but nothing can compare to the descriptive writtings found in the books that send your mind on a wild fantasy journey. Movie always cut sequences from the books for running time. There's A LOT MORE going on in the books.

Fellowship of the Ring is the first part. The three movies (Fellowship, Two Towers and Return of the King) are a great endeavor, but doomed to fail at capturing the true magic of the books. Read the Hobbit, then the Trilogy ... then see the movies. You'll get a lot more out of them and maybe be a bit smarter for the experience.

Well...the movies are VERY different from the books. I read all the books first, and I loved them. Because I loved the books so much, I really didn't like the movies. They messed up many of the characters, took ENORMOUS liberties with the plot, and basically made a mess of things.
In the first movie, the plot isn't altered too much - it's more that certain events are omitted to make the story shorter. But in the second and third movies, entire events are changed needlessly. It would make a lover of the books angry (like me).
Cinematically, the movies are extraordinary. If you want to enjoy the movies, I suggest seeing them first. Then, go read the books to find out the REAL story.

The movies are amazing! The first one is Fellowship of the ring and get the extended versions. If you want to read the books first that might help explain stuff in the movies but let me warn you they cut things from the book due to the length of the movies.

J.R.R. Tolkien's books are some of the greatest ever written, but I have some serious problems with the movie adaptations. The acting was bland and over-dramatic (with the exceptions of Ian McKellen and Andy Serkis) seemingly to match the simplistic and melodramatic dialogue, the action was overdone and many of the subplots felt underdeveloped and tacked-on. However, the special effects and cinematography were amazing, and the New Zealand scenery was absolutely beautiful.

The first movie is Fellowship of the Rings. I enjoyed all three movies and I never read any of the books. I liked the acting and the scenery--it was beautiful. It also keeps you intrigued without being boring--they are long movies, like 3 hours each.
Enjoy!

Yes, they're really that good. Even if you have no Tolkien background, they are still incredible movies in their own right. The Fellowship of the Ring is the first part, and the films are truly an achievement in directing, special effects, and screenwriting, as well as acting and costuming.

If you like fantasy, they were fantastic. They had fabulous scenery, clean-cut storylines, and according to all the LotR fan friends I have, the movies follow the book very closely.
But yes, the Lord of the Rings movies are fabulous, regardless of opinion. They were well-done. But whether you like them or not is a whole different matter.
But I would tell you to watch them and find out yourself if you're so curious.
