Depends on the pet, I have a 5 foot Nile moniter and a 2 1/2 foot savannah monitor, large reptiles, only safe to pet if they have eaten first

I pet my pitbull on the head. I scratch behind her ears and pat her on the back. I am always kissing her and she climbs in my lap even though she weighs 76 pounds.

well with my llamas i pet their ears and then their sides... umm yeah its fun to try to pet a fish cause it moves around alot

i have a labrador retriever and she must have the softest head ever! I like to pet her head and face and neck because they're so darn squishy and fluffy.

if i had a pet, i would use my hand to rub the fur. that is about it. because i don't like the animals in my face, they can lick my hands, arms or legs, but not the face.

I play rough with my dogs, well the younger one at least, the older ones getting too old and ached.
the "dog whisperer" guy says that dogs like to play fight, so I grab her neck and push her around, then she lays on her back to get her stomach rubbed..

My friend asumes that you use your hand, but I think it would be easier to kill your pet and not worry about it.

you shouldnt pet a fish i have heard that it hurts them cos you rub off their slime.
