You are real limited with a 4 gallon.
A goldfish as has been mentioned can grow to over a foot in size. So avoid that. And besides that they are extreamly messy fish and really should have at least 10 gallons per fish even when they are young and small.

A betta is a good choice but not real filling for a 4 gallon.

Many in the tetra family also keep a small size. The problem with tetras is that they are schooling fish and prefer groups of 6 or more.

You could try a couple of male guppies. That way you have colorful fish and they will not breed so you end up overcrowding your tank creating more problems.

Then you could throw a snail in to work on algae control.

With only 4 gallons you're pretty limited. Goldfish simply grow too big in the long run for such a small tank.

A single male betta would do well. (Maybe add a single apple/mystery snail.) However generally betta prefer higher temps in the 75-82 range, but will survive in the low 70s. (Does the room it will be kept in maintain 70 average temp?)

Small cold water fish like guppies, zebra danio, white cloud minnows, and some of the smaller barbs and tertas (be sure to ask about their adult size, and temp requirements). In general with these fish limit yourself to 1 inch of fish per gallon.

No Goldfish they grow to big, that would be cruel!

Also you can keep Betta's in with other fish! I have a male Betta in with guppies, catfish, mollies, and tetra. He has never attacked and killed anyone, but that depends on the fish.

You could probably get a couple of tetras...I have one neon tetra that is really really old all his buddies died years ago, so they don't exactly need 6. Those are probably your best bet.

Or a couple of all male guppies, or all females. You don't want babies though in a tank that small.

DO NOT GET A GOLDFISH!

They get over 2 feet long, are horribly mseesy, have huge oxygen ,requirements, and it is just plain cruel to stick almost any fish into a bowl.

Of course, thats not what you want to hear, otherwise you would have gotton a real tank. For the biorb, id suggest the most abused tropical fish in gobby, the betta. Just get one though, 2 will kill each other

That size tank is great for a Betta but too small for much else. You could put a African dwarf frog in with the Betta. Just give them a floating plant and small cave at the bottom for the frog to hide if the Betta gets nippy. If you put the two together without giving the frog a place to get away, the Betta might nip him too much. But I had a similar setup with no problems.

So far, I like Fish N Hole's answer the best. By getting multiple male fancy-tailed guppies, you have a large variety of colors, and you don't have to worry about them attacking each other.

Good luck!

I agree with a betta, they are nice and colorful and if taken care of properly they can be very active. Put some nice plants in there and make it sort of like a water garden, just don't get plastic plants cause they will tear the bettas fins.

Four gallons... (one of these groups would be okay, not all of them!)

You could put a trio of guppies in (but they will multiply!)
or
A Betta
or
Four small-type tetras
or
A few ghost shrimp
or
Three kuhli loaches (with at least one hiding spot for each).
Have fun!

A Betta, only one because it will kill the other fish.
