A subwoofer is a type of loudspeaker dedicated to the reproduction of bass frequencies, typically from about 20 Hz to about 200 Hz. It is difficult for small loudspeakers to reproduce frequencies below 40 Hz, especially above 100 dB, and so it is often advantageous to use a loudspeaker intended specifically for this task.

well is the subwoofer moving while your radio is on and the volume is loud enough (about half volume) to get it to move, if not then the wiring could be done wrong, the subwoofer option on your head unit is turned off, you may have a blown fuse(check and see if power light is on, on the amplifier) ground wire is loose. Just have to check all of your connections and fuses and make sure all are ok.

I think you mean a SUB-WOOFER and it handles the most lowest frequencies of the sound or music in the form of BASS.

That's subwoofer. You should hear extremely low tones. You can put your hand on it and see if it vibrates during movies. Especially explosions
