Judgeing by most of the responses I guess I should have been clearer in with my question. He takes a nap in the mourning for 2 hours, a nap in the afternoon for about 2 hours, and then still gets sleepy at around 5:30 in the evening. When I put him down this early he has a hard time sleeping through the night. He wakes up at 12:30 or 1:00 for a bottle. He also sleeps until 7:00 in the morning. So, he is getting plenty of sleep, I just want him to stay up an extra hour or two in the evenings so he won't want a bottle in the middle of the night.

why on earth would you want to do that???
babies need sleep, and lots of it... having
children requires a sacrifice of your personal
comforts, for the sake of another soul...

It's normal for them to be sleepy at 5:30. I would say let him have a short evening nap and then it should help to stretch his bedtime out. I'm not sure what time he goes to bed but a schedule like that would last my daughter (10 months) until about 10 - she's a late-to-bed- kinda gal though (usually around 9:30), i'm almost more concerned with getting her to sleep sooner!

Many people will say that sleep begets sleep. The more s/he sleeps, the more s/he'll want to sleep. This has proved true for me. On nights where she's not gone to sleep until really really late and had little sleep through the day, she sleeps less at night too.

Why do you want him/her staying up later??? Babies that age need around 12-15 hours of sleep (including naps)....if you really want him to, have him take a longer nap during the day (or add another short nap in the evening like from 4-5)....

Keep all your normal activities the same.
wake up earlier and let the baby take a longer nap in the afternoon then in the evenings play with your baby, so that your baby learns that at this specific time there is an activity that we do wither it be bath time for relaxing, exercises time on the floor.
If baby's are left to there own devises they will play for a bit and take a nap, so it is up to you to keep busy with the baby.
sometimes it takes a while to change a schedule around for baby's.,My youngest used to sleep all night and now all of a sudden he is up half the night...what a joy I have been the last couple of days let me tell you . lol
good luck mine are three yrs and one at five months and so far when one is asleep the other is awake and evenings trying to get them both to sleep is a challenge.

i think i have the perfect way to keep your baby up..this is what i do..you have to put your baby on a scheldule..like try to put the baby down for a nap around 12 or 1pm..and then let the baby play for awhile..then the baby will take another nap 3-4 hours after that..and all you have to do is play with the baby until you are ready to put the baby to sleep..but its not good to let the baby stay up really late..so the baby should be sleepy around 10:00-10:30pm..

Must be waking up early during the night or too many times?? I would try to adjust feeding time to like 6 or 7, play somehow making them move like rolling over, crawling, something physical, read books that are loud and exciting, bath, then depending how long they wait to eat would feed around 9:30 or 10 then put them to bed...how late are you talking?

He's probably waking up in the middle of the night because he's hungry. If you woke up at 3 a.m. and desperately wanted a snack, yet your husband said no and refused to get you one, how would you feel? Just try to hang in there. If he's hungry he's hungry. Soon enough he'll be sleeping through the night, and all of this will be a distant memory. :)

oh i never seen a mom ask this kinds of questions!!! i always hear them saying how can i get my baby to sleep early/..i guess ur baby wakesup early in the morning thats why u want him to stay up late.but thats not a good thing cause there is some glads in baby;s body dont work after 10 o'clock.it works only between 8-10.so it is better if u leave him sleep anytime he wants. good luck.

looks like you want him/her to sleep whole night long? When you want him to stay up , let the baby finish his meal and then talk to him (play with him). Let him play with his toys for a while then u play with him for a while, you can take him for a stroller ride if weather permits. give him shower then massage him , spend some time in massaging , in the meantime its going to be his another meal time, now you can feed him and then put him in bed. I am sure that's enough of staying up for a nine month old (specially if you try it yourself otherwise they can stay up as long as they want). I hope this helps you.

I don't have too much experience with kids, but I would say if he or she took a nap earlier, then your baby would be able to stay up later.
