You could just look in the phone book if you want miscellaneous names.

You need to be more specific about your characters' context (their nationality, their time period, perhaps their socioeconomic class, etc.) if you want more specific/helpful answers.

Well how about the names Hermione Granger and Luna Lovegood. Both are unusual names and I don't know to many girls with that name in fact I don't know any with that sort of name. In fact most of the names in the Harry Potter books are very strange and come from sources like star formation in the sky and words and names that aren't commonly used and have proud meanings.http://www.hp-lexicon.org/wizards/a-z/a.html. This web site will give you the information on how J. K. Rowling came up with the names of the characters for each of series of books in the Harry Potter Series and their meaning.

You should try Social Security's baby name database, which is organized by year. Choose the year your character was born in, and you can select a name that was actually popular then. That way, you won't be naming a 40-year old woman Brianna, or something that wasn't even around at that time. A time-appropriate name will help lend authenticity to your character.

I think you should name your characters names that are apart of their time. For example, if you're writing about teens, try not to give them names that were popular in the 30's, eventhough people still name kids those names, sometimes readers may get confused and think that "Annie Rose" is 60, instead of 13.
