How good are Goodman air conditioners?

I am trying to decide between a Goodman and Trane HVAC systems. The price for the Goodman is 70% of the Trane. The Goodman also has a far superior warranty. Is Trane that much better? Is it worth the cost?

Nothing wrong with Trane. Goodman had a bad name years and years ago. New owner over 10 years ago, fired everyone and started over with good product. Goodman has a better warranty than Trane and should be just as good of a unit. Make sure that you are working with a good contractor, this is the most important thing. About the only thing differant between name brands any more is the price and the warranty. I have sold Goodman for the last 10 or so years and have had very little call backs or warranty work to do on Goodman A/C systems. If you are talking about a Goodman Heat pump i would not do it, but a goodman A/C is fine. CHECK THE CONTRACTOR OUT.

I have had a Goodman for 5 years. This year it was determined that was a leak, but they were not able to find it. I have been paying for recharging the unit all summer, and now they say they found the leak. Goodman has a warranty on the coils, but does not pay labor, which is going to be over $800.
Why would correctly manufactured copper coils fail after only 5 years.
I will never buy another Goodman, and will tell everyone I know not to.
By the way, my neighbor has a Goodman also, and has been fighting problems with it for the 5 years he had his. Fortunately for him, he purchased a warranty.
I doubt that he will ever buy another one either.

Stay away from Goodman, Janitrol, and York. Terrible products.

Go with Carrier or Trane --- something you can rely on. Its worth the extra money.

If I took over a company that had a crappy product (and a bad reputation) and went so far as to fire everyone and start over with a new product..... then.... I would start over with a new brand name too. Janitrol did that and became Goodman. Goodman got a chance to earn its own reputation and it ain't Good, man.

I have owed a Goodman A/C / Gas for 17 years now and just found out the heat exchanger busted. A/C is still working....which is great being summer. Being 17 years old I think it's time to buys a new unit. I have only had one small problem and I think that speaks for itself. Goodman has been a good to us.

Goodman was known as Janitrol, and for being the low end of the industry for years. They had a bad reputation for quality and warranty. They have gotten somewhat better in recent years i.e. now have 5 yr. compressor warranty that had been industry standard for everyone else. Still have some problems, but economically priced. Trane is high end, and you pay for it!! Good overall quality. Industry patents to prevent copying. Other than York, all others are middle -of -the road, with decent dependabilty, and reasonable pricing. Leave York alone!!!

I work at an Air Force base. Goodman is the unit of choice for our HVAC techs here. They tell me they like the price and dependability. I agree Trane makes a good unit but so does Goodman.


But if you insist on buying a Trane. Get an American Standard instead. American Standard owns Trane. The techs tell me they are the exact same units with different labels. Trane is a premium brand name with premium pricing.

I have a Trane - I have NEVER even heard of Goodman. An air conditioner works hard - you can not go wrong with a Trane.

I had a 3 ton 13 seer Goodman ac installed 5 years ago. had problems from the first . Still not running wright . Biggest piece of crap. Buy other brand.
