I purchased a Viewsonic VA712B (has built-in speakers) and thought the sound was not very good. My PC is about six years old and therefore has an old sound card. If I purchase a new PC with up to date components such as the sound card, will that make the speakers perform/sound any better?
The monitor is fantastic, but speakers sound bad enough that I doubt I will keep it unless they would be significantly affected by a new sound card.

Speakers: 2x1 watt
Amplifier: 1-watt @ THD < 8%

^ ^ these are u'r speakers

Sorry pal, u'r picture quality maybe great, but the built-in speakers are not !

THD (total harmonic distortion) of 8% is sure aweful 4 sound quality.
If you doubt u'r sound cards abilities, check it out with a headphone and compare v/s Viewsonic speakers

Yes. I purchased my computer about 3 years ago and they came with a new sound card (it's Dell). Normally I don't really care about the sound, but at that time when I turned on the volume the sound was really clear and sharp, the bass also responded really well too. Of course in order to get good sound, you need to have better speakers too.
If you still like the computer (fast speed, enough RAM, etc) just keep the PC, otherwise sell it and get new computer. If you keep the old PC, try go to amazon.com or Ebay. Find a new sound card from there. Just make sure that the new PC card that you're tyring to buy has the same slot (PCI/AGP/PCI-Express) with your Mother Board (otherwise, it won'f fit). You also need to pay attention with what consumer thinks about the product.
For the speakers, don't hestitate to spend more money on them. I have had bad experience by buying $15 speakers, they were useless! Pay attention with the consumer ratings and manfacturing guarantees. Amazon or Ebay have everything for you. Good luck!

If your sound is grinding or some speakers won't even work, get another speaker cable. If the speaker sounds too low-tech (Sounds are more like beeps or MIDI music is just horrible, get a sound card.

P.S. The computer itself makes some beeps by itself (With no soundcard or speakers), so don't get confused by it beeping. It should only make 1 beep a second or less in most cases.
