Either Spybot (search and destroy) or Ad-aware are sound recommendations. There after pick the one you like and stay with it.
I don't know what the heck a defrag is supposed to achieve, (Ignore that one!)

AVG is probably the bets free anti virus program, Zone Alarm is also one of the best free firewall programs.
I would suggest you do the following.
If you have no firewall get Zone Alarm and set it up.
next get AVG and set that up.
If you have a virus AVG will find it and fix it.
Get Spy-bot Search and destroy and run that, that will get rid of the spy ware and tracking cookies on your computer.
But remember that any program you have that relies on advertising to pay for it will be useless if you remove a part of it, these tend to be 'free' programs that you downloaded from the internet. Avg, zone alarm or spy-bot don't come into that catagory.
Be careful what you remove - ebay tool bars show up as being spyware with Spybot so dont remove anything youre not sure of.
Some viruses can be very resilient. So if you are sure you have a virus after all that go to the Microsoft web site and use the Malicious Software removal tool.
Good luck

yahoo anti-spy is allmost ineffective at removing spyware, its more of a adware detector
what you need to do is go to http://www.safer-networking.org/,and download spy-bot,this is a free anti-spy program which apart from detecting and cleaning most of the spyware around also prevents any future spyware infecting your p.c
this is done with the immunization feature, which when you are attacked by spyware,it acts as a firewall and says NO and the infection is thwarted
if you combine spybot with adaware personal, avalible from http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/,it will protect you from 99% of all known spyware, and along with windows defender from microsoft...http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx,you will be totally protected from spyware
one tip:beware of online messages saying"you are infected",as the programs they are asking you to download are spyware in disguise, only download from registered sites and download.com
good luck

I have prepared this to aid you. Topics covered are: Anti virus, Anti spy ware, Browsers, e-mail, Word processors, Database, Spreadsheets, Presentations, Drawings and Photo manipulations. All programmes described are free to use, some even for commercial use.
Antiviral.
AVG free. Excellent protection available from: http://www.Grisoft.com
Don't use two antiviral products together as they may be incompatible. If your Antiviral trial has run out, then remove product from your computer and get the AVG installed.
Anti-spyware
Essential products are: Adaware SE from: http://www.lavasoft.com
Spybot SD http://www.safer-networking.org/en/spybotsd/index.html
Spywareblaster http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
Windows Defender - from Microsoft downloads.
Office Applications
Open Office has an extremely good free to use and distribute product at http://www.openoffice.org
It contains programmes fully functional in Word-processing, Database, Spreadsheets, Drawing and Presentation. It looks and feels like Microsoft Office and can even make PDF's
Photo-manipulations
For ease of use and management of your photo files try Kodak easyshare software http://www.kodak.com
or Picasso. http://.picasa.google.com/
For advanced and fully functional photographic manipulation gimp2 is very similar to Photoshop and is available from http://gimp.org
Browsers and E-mail programmes.
Can recommend Firefox for browsing and has many safety features installed and is self updating and for a general e-mail programme, Thunderbird is very good. Go to:
http://www.mozilla.com/products/
Fun and helpful programmes
Have a look at Calendar Magic, http://www.stokepoges.plus.com/calendar.htm
it has lots of Scientific, Geometry, Factor and Expression calculators as well as Global distances, Sun and Moon Data, a Pregnancy Calculator, Time Data and Alarm clocks as well as an extremely comprehensive range of Calendars in about 27 different formats from Afghanistan to Vietnamese, including Chinese and Hindu.
C Cleaner.http://www.ccleaner.com/
This will tell you a lot about what is on your computer, such as running programmes, cookies, History, settings etc. and will help you clean up and remove unwanted items. Be careful how you use it as it is a very powerful programme and you should read the help index before you do anything with it.
Hope this information is of help to you and others.

Download Spybot Search and Destroy and run it. Try also Ad-aware , plus Zone Alarm. You also want an anti-virus protector too , plus some c-cleaner (sounds like wrap , but 1st letter is c). All available free from www.download.com.
I have them all , and no problems in 4 years.
Good luck.
