I have the same problem. We close all the vents downstairs in the summer to try to push more air upstairs but it is still hot upstairs and still freezing sownstairs.

I live in a 2 story house and we usually keep the air between 72 and 68 all the time. But you might want to try getting a few box fans and try sticking them in the areas that are warmer over a vent or in the coolest area of the upstairs. That can cool off a whole area or stick one in the hall and let the air flow from the bedrooms..

Use fans to pull the cool air through the house, and put a portable AC in an upstairs window. My grandparents used to rent a 2-story house when I was a youngster.

i assume u have 2 units, 1 up and 1 down......turn the upstairs to 72 and the downsairs to 75......turn the fan switch on the downstairs unit to "on"......this will pull some of the cooler air that is coming downstairs for upstairs unit and blow it thru the lower part. u may need to play with the settings but i works great for us.......

So is mine.
Your best solution is to minimize hear gain to the upstairs rooms. Keep the doors on south side rooms closed allowing the other upstairs rooms to remain cooler. Also, (if you have eaves) hang shade cloth or bamboo screens from them. Less sun on south facing wall equals less heat gain equals less cooling required.
As others have mentioned, fans and window ACs are an option.

You might try to close all the air vents u have in downstairs, that air won't get out that much in downstairs but the air flow to your upstairs will definitely increase.

if you can afford another a/c have it for the upstairs rooms or use fans to help circulate the air.
a friend has three a/c units but he has an 10 bedroom home with an air conditioned 5 car garage

We have a portible air conditioner in our bedroom that we run if we need it in the night (with the door shut). The rest of our upstairs is warmer, but we don't run the central air at night.

use a box fan upstairs. position it so that the fan blows OUT, not in. It will draw cool air from the lower level.
