I'm not sure which state/country Lake City is in, but here's what I found on hamster rescues.

First of all, it is hamster. Second, please do not give it to the pet store. They will most likely sell it as snake food or just give it to someone that knows nothing about it and will mistreat it. Here is a great site that will hopefully help- http://groups.msn.com/hamstersgalore
you will probably be able to find someone who lives in your area who would like a hamster. If not, try asking the local shelters or putting an ad in the paper. Make sure who ever takes your hamster knows these things:
1) Syrian hamsters (the bigger ones that are often called teddy bears) are solitary and cannot be housed with any other animals including other Syrians.
2) Do not use ceder or pine bedding. It has toxic chemicals that will kill the hamster.
3) Make sure that they always have a chew stick, hamsters teeth never stop growing.
4) Wire cages and plastic cages are just a recipe for disaster. Hamsters can usually fit through the bars, and can chew through plastic like nothing! An aquarium (10 gallon) is the best bet!

Hope all of this helps! If you still need help, feel free to email me at wicked.pixi@yahoo.com
