Is there a way for me to hear what I really sound like as opposed to the way I think I sound?

Sing into a microphone and have a speaker there so you can hear yourself from the speaker.

Covering or plugging one ear helps you to hear if you're in tune. But for best results, A microphone, an amp and a set of headphones from the amp will be better. But nothing beats recording it and listening to the play-back.

For some reason if you cover your ears it can help.
It sounds strange but raise your arms in the air so they cover your ears not your hands, i used to do it when i was a kid. Not sure why but it seems to work only not as clearly as a recording of course. Also it looks stupid f people see you! :)
