Right now, I am considering "Martha's Hangover," but not everyone understands it without an explanation. Meaning: I'm all crafty and resourceful like Martha Stewart, but some of the things I do are so loud and covered in glitter, that Martha would only consider them after a night of binge drinking. I think it is cute and original, but I'm not sure if it is marketable.

no. dont use someone else's name for your business name. especially Martha. oh god no. well you cant ask us what to name your business, unless you want to pay us for it and us take the credit. so you should think of a name yourself.
write down on a paper words that come to your mind about:
you
creative
life
things
flowers
paper
color
and so on....

then cross off the words that you dont really like and then look at the words that ramain and try to put them together for a name.

like: cristi crafti or paper magic or glue that up!

While I agree it's on the original side, you are right about it being a little unmarketable.

Could you answer a couple of questions for me?

1) What part of the country are you in?

2) Does the craft business center on any particular type of craft?

Picking a name for a business is tough. You need to consider what not only sounds good at the moment but will it work over time. Is this name only going to be used for the craft business... or what if while you are doing this craft business, the direction or focus of the business changes?

My parents used to have a craft business named B&E Shoppe. Cute since Benny and Elma were their first names. However, the "shoppe" never really fit.

I picked the name "Mythical Ventures" for a renaissance faire business. Wonderful there but now I've gone and started another endeavor in a totally different environment. Plus, "mythical" has a bizarre connotation when people are writing out checks for merchandise.

Anyway, I'd love to suggest some names for you, but if you could answer my questions, I'd be better able to come up with some possibilities.

The naming of your business could be one of the most important decisions you will make. A name's originality and legal availability will create a real asset value of its own, as it becomes marketed and gains market acceptance.

The name you choose will become the focal point of all the benefits and features that relate to your business. Customers will be able to find and refer others to it in the future.

Since any names that are suggested here may already be owned by another party, I wanted to go a different route...

I suggest either hiring a name creation firm or get together with your friends and/or family and throw a "name party" & have everyone bounce some ideas around. Compile a listing of names that you like the best. Once you have that list, do as much free research as you can before you delve into comprehensive research.

I listed some links where you can do some preliminary name checking. However, please be aware that this is merely scratching the surface of what's out there.

Only comprehensive research will tell you if the name is truly available. But, these links are free & a great place to start, so I'd try them out first.

There are other sites that offer free searching capabilities in conjunction with their commercial services, so I'm not able to post those links due to the Yahoo! TOS. You'll also want to check domain names & yellow pages, so simply do a search for "free domain name search" and "national yellowpages" and the appropriate links will pop up.

Hope that helps! I wish you much success & happiness in all your ventures!

That name is cute. It depends on what you're selling, craft-wise. Barrel of Crafts
Crafty Fun
Crafts Galore
Craftamundo (just kidding)

um...
Well, if you use Martha people might think your name is Martha. I don't know. Don't you want to use your name so people will know you? Just a suggestion....

Good luck though.

I wouldn't get involved in using Martha's name, she can be pretty hardcore about copywright....

I would be original and do something like....

Crazy Ace's
Glitter Gultch Accesories
Practically Fun
or an oxymoron like .... Hott Chills, Lazy Energy, Thin Phats, and so on.

Good Luck and let us know what you go with!
