Is Pittsburgh the south? Becuase Boston homes are 5 times more expensive than homes in Pittsburgh as well. Boston is an expensive city, Im sure housing there is more expensive than 90% of the US. Typically jobs in Boston pay more than jobs elsewhere to compensate for the differene as well. But you guys have the red sox, and I know people in Pittsburgh who who would pay with their children to live in a town with a good baseball team.

state legislation and regulations on the cost of living, labor, wages, and taxes. Look at the tax rate on items that you purchase everyday and then you can determine the cost of living. Also there are not that many people living in the south compared to the north it has always been that way. It was how each state is set up and if the govenor of that state cuts taxes on home purchase or what ever the citizens complain the most about including car insurance property tax etc. Car insurance and car taxes are higher in the south.

This is because the cost of living is different. There are not as many jobs, and the pay scale for those jobs is different. In Mississippi where I live if they charged the same thing for a house as in Boston everyone would be homeless, due to the high rate of poverty.

It is because people in Boston are foolish enough to pay the high prices for the priveledge of living in ice, snow and freezing weather.
But that is okay, stay where you are. We ignorant folks down here in Texas would just as soon keep our cost of living as it is.

I live in the south and the pay scale here is so low. Also with the hurricanes here you have to sell your house for cheap because the buyer will have to pay tons for the home insurance and flood ins.

I think it's because the wages are smaller. Thank goodness for cheaper/more affordable homes. If all homes are expensive then it will be hard to buy one.
