Congratulations on quitting!!!!!!!! YEAAAAAA!!! Hard thing to do huh? I did it after twenty four years and it was a difficult process and i still think of them often. Anyway if they have dustcovers, you should throw them away. Hardcovers without fabric can be gently washed with a washcloth and soapy water. The pages are like a permeable membrane and probably will not ever come out, sorry I wish i had a solution. Now you understand why its such a nasty habit huh? I would at least try like the other gal said and use Frebreze. Other than that are are stuck with the smell. At least be happy that you got rid of the nasty stinking habit. Use the books as a daily reminder not to ever go back to the habit. Ive had things still stink years after Ive quit also so I totally understand what you mean.

My own library had a smell for years. But if you want to light some incense in the room where most of the books are, you might at least be able to make the smell more pleasant.

I had more trouble with clothes hanging in the closet, actually. I didn't think to open the closet door when I burned incense, and when I went to dig out my out-of-season stuff, I nearly puked!

Just one more penalty we pay for smoking. Eventually, the smell dissipates. It's really more that you have a nose again!

Open them and set them out in the sun on a breezy day and let the breeze blow through the pages. I realize this may take awhile with so many books, but it's free!

I would wipe the hard back books with 409, or fantastic, to remove any "residue" from the smoke that has filtered on the covers.

(I bet they brighten up, after you do this, also!).

Wash the walls, and shelves, before you put them back and make sure they are dry.

I wish you well..

There is a machine, I have on, it is called an ozonator. It cost me about 300.00 but it gets smoke from a house fire so it should work on your books. I would open them before Iran the machine. Good luck.

You can try placing several shallow bowls around the room, fill them with dark vinegar. Leave room closed for up to a week. The vinegar will turn black with the smell.
