I love both anime and manga. I think that people are turned off to it for a few reasons.
1) They see the bad ones first and thus catagorize them all as being bad.
2) They have heard of the explicit nature of some of them and look at them as basically cartoon porn even though not all, or even many, of them are like that.
3) It is something foreign that they do not totally understand and thus, rather than learn about it, they shun it and choose to ignore it.
Those are the reasons that I think people don't like it. In my mind the animation in anime and manga is 100 times better than that of almost any American Cartoon. The only one that has come remotely close was the X-men animated series and it was only close. Also, the story development is much better and much mroe in depth. There are actually meanings to everything rather than something just being there for no aparent reason, unless you are reading or watching a satire anime/manga.
Nevertheless, that is what I see to be the cause, I may be wrong and have been in the past, but it is just the way I see it.

I love anime and manga! There's no good excuse of why people don't like it! I guess becuz it's animated they think it's 4 kids but it's not. They all assume that all anime is like pokemon or yugioh..... no offense but those are kiddie.... And when it's translated into english sometimes it's changed becuz homosexuals and other junk is unacceptable. When it'c changed it's not as good. Personally i think they are too stubborn and afraid to watch or read anime/manga. They don't want to change. If they just looked they'll see that it's totally awesome! I mean they have all these cool genres so they aren't all kiddie things with monsters and ghosts! They have roamnces, dramas, comedies, action, sci-fi and many more! A lot of anime are realistic while a lot are fictional. So i really don't know why people don't like it! I absolutely adore anime and manga! Especially Fruits Basket! Anime and Manga are so much better then cartoons! They are all drawn so beautifully!!!

God, I can't believe only fans answered this.
My first exposure to anime was extremely positive. I still love Ghost in the Shell, Ninja Scroll, and a few other of the Manga Studios hits that reach the US in the nineties.
I soon found that the quality of animation and story present in those films was the exception in the genre, rather than the norm. I like deep plots, and compelling original animation - or even better - animation that makes me wonder if it is animated at all (CGI, FF: Advant Children). Most anime is carbon copied - people whose eyes are bigger than their necks, the same stupid exaggerated expressions. And THIS is what is replacing the American styles? It's like... if France decided to tell all their tales through carnival caricatures... would THAT be the coolest style of animation ever? Would THAT be worth abandoning all the other styles for?
The stories are usually just as bad. Not even the main story so much as the dialogue. Anime with good realistic dialogue is absurdly rare. That is a big one for me.
Now, I shouldn't be too hard on it - it is created more by/for Japan than other cultures. I understand that the Japanese don't love every movie or game I love. Cultures are different, and that is ok. But it usually feels that, either through translation, or expectations, most animes seem like self-parody to Americans. I honestly laugh my butt off in seeming how bad most of them are.
But if people really enjoy them, who am I to criticize. I just know they're not for me.

I am not a fan of Anime. I am a life time comic fan and collector. Here are some of my issues with anime. (by the way I I do not have a grudge against it, it is just personal taste)
1. A lack of original style. With only a few exceptions anime looks like it is all drawn by the same artist, or at least by artists who are doing their best to copy one style.
2. A lack of original stories. Admittedly, I have read very little Manga and watched very few anime shows, but those I have watched seem to repeat the same themes over and over again.
3. What's with all the school girls? Is every one in Japan a pedophile (of course, I know that they are not). I am not even talking about porn, I am talking mainstream comics. It seems every attractive woman has to wear a school girl uniform (or a bunny costume).
4. The voice over voices are typically annoying.
I am certain that there are exceptions to these observations. Without doubt there are anime and manga stories that I would like if I gave them a chance. But I am not willing to go through the 19 I do not like to find the 1 that I do like.
It is just a matter of taste. there are undoubtedly things I like that you do not care for.

Because some people just think of it as porn which may be true some of the times but not all the time maybe anime and manga should just clean it up a bit and more people would like it

Because they only watch the sucky ones on Saturday mornings, and only hear about the explicit ones.
Also they don't grasp the concept of variety here in america. here the only comics we have are about superheroes. In Japan, your options range from the misadventures of a ferret, to demon dogs and their reluctant girlfriends, to ninjas, to killing off an entire class of high school students on national TV. They're jelous that the japanese are allowed to draw boobs and yaoi and here in the US it's considered "socially incorrect"
I started when i was justa kid on Pokemon(before the genre had been beaten to death) and Sailor Moon and Outlaw Star before i even knew what anime was. then i got to high school and found a clique of friends that got me addicted to anime and manga and japanese culture in general. What the normies don't realize is that somewhere out there, whether they know it or not, there is an anime or manga to suit their tastes. belive me, there just is. the japanese have been doing this for so long that they have covered every genre there is. Find it, watch it, embrace it. Japan is paradise for those who never outgrew "cartoons". And even if you did, watch it anyways, cause there are plenty of things out there that do not deserve the label of "cartoon" or "comics". I would like to reccomend DeathNote or Gunslinger Girl. they are both very good and have no traces of childish or explicit themes. I repeat; find it, watch it, read it, embrace it.

I personally am not a fan of either anime or manga, but I wouldn't say I have a grudge against them. They're just not my thing. I prefer more old-school cartoons like Looney Toons and "Rocky and Bullwinkle". I know a lot of other people like anime and manga, and that's cool with me.

Quite frankely, I think it goes back to Speed Racer. I LIKE anime, but after watching Speed Racer (ironically enough for a history project) I was ready to hurt anime.
