Hello hdluvakiddie,
You can buy memory at most computer or electronic store. But before you do that, you need to know what type. Lots of computer accessories/component fall under this category: hard drives, those USB memory sticks, floppy disks, DDR (there are two types and many configurations), SRAM, SDRAM, sEEPROMs, etc...
All the types I listed are indeed memory and the accesses(reading and writing) to them are random. Hence, they are called random access memory.
Without knowing what you are looking into doing with the computer, I can not really advise you on which type you need; however, my guess is that you are searching to increase your main memory which is the memory that is used by software when it executes. Without knowing what type of computer you have, I can not tell you which type but if it is a relatively new one and is a personal comptuer (as oppose to servers, etc...), then you are probably looking for DDR I or DDR II. The amount and configuration is determined by you and the computer manual. Thus, consult the computer manual for possible configurations and memory types and the maximum allowed memory capacity.

Yes, you have to purchase it. It is a physical addition to the CPU so if you aren't up to the task you may want to consider taking the CPU with you to the store. I believe places like Circuit City, Best Buy, etc... may install it for you if you purchase there. Maybe even for free, I really don't recall the specifics.
More RAM is a must if you play a lot of games, have streaming content, etc... You will definitely be able to tell the difference.
