I don't think that there are really any long term affects to playing both. When I was in college for music education, we had to learn to play them all to some extent. I've played the clarinet for almost 20 years now. I tried to learn the trumpet later in life but I was never very good at it :0) Just remember to concentrate more on your main instrument. If you are a trumpet player and want to learn a woodwind, I would suggest starting with the flute, it's the easiest transition. The oboe would be a good choice to. I don't think it will damage your lips at all. I do think that it's easier for brass players to learn reed . Don't know why, that just seems to be what I've seen. Good luck and have fun!

There aren't usually any long-term effects caused by playing musical instruments. There are a lot of health benefits, though, which can include stronger lungs, and better lung capacity. Reeded instruments, in the beginning, may cut your lips, but it doesn't last long, and can usually be prevented by keeping your reed moist.

I, myself, play the trumpet, and my band teacher plays both, the trumpet and reed. He plays just fine. He has been playing both for about 8 years, now. So don't worry. No harm.
