I'm not a racist, but I think affirmative action is ridiculous. Favoring minorities because of their race is institutionalized racism in my opinion. Primarily minority schools nationwide receive about half of the funding that primarily white schools do. Wouldn't it be better to fill that gap so that minorities will have an equal education and credentials needed to get a job on their own merit instead of getting "bonus points" on exams or interviews simply because of their race?

It is a band-aid. It is now being counter-productive. Now it is the other races (including whites) that are being discriminated against because companies are afraid not to hire blacks or hispanics regardless of their qualifications, because they will get sued. I think now we are educated enough to let affirmative action go the way of the dodo. If you are qualified, you get the job whether you are black, white, hispanic or asian or anything else.

I agree - affirmative action just keeps encouraging us to differentiate between races and treat each other as inequals.

I think it was necessary at first, to jump-start some opportunities for minorities who normally would be overlooked due to racism. And I know racism is far from gone, but I think we are at the stage where treating everyone equaly is the right thing to do.

Affirmative action applied to American Blacks with some history in this country.....not much of a problem with that.
Affirmative action applied to Hispanics and Asians and African immigrants....got a problem with that.
The slots for blacks are being taken by people that, in my opinion, are not entitled to be beneficiary of a program intended to address some of the injustices imposed on AMERICAN BLACKS in the past.

Have you read The Bell Curve? That would explain a lot of the so-called problems in our attempts to level the playing field. Yes, our society is heading down the drain because of this.
