The tallest mountain in the world measured from base to peak is Mauna Kea in the Hawaiian Islands. The base is some 16,000 feet below the surface of the Pacific Ocean, and the peak rises 13,796 feet above it, for a total height of 29,796 feet. Mt Everest, at 29,028 feet comes in second.

On land, Everest. I think there are higher mountains under the sea, or of islands rising from a deep ocean bed. But I do not know the details - look in Wikipedia.
