Les Dennis started off as padding on the "Russ Abbott Laughter Show" (yes, just as lame as it sounds). He broke into the mainstream with a comedy partner called Dustin Gee, and they were very popular. Then Gee died, leaving Dennis one half of a double act. The Mavis Riley impersonation was one of his better set pieces from the double act days, and it became a kind of party trick he could use for instant recognition. Against all the odds, he parlayed his patter into a gig as the host of the Family Fortunes quiz and married an actress who was "the next big thing" in TV. Her next big thing turned out to be another man, and Dennis became, briefly, the most famous cuckold in Britain. He's gone on to do Celebrity Big Brother, nearly having a breakdown live on TV, some serious acting work and whatever else he can do to keep his career active. I don't particularly like his work, but I respect a man who can dust himself down so often and try and get through.

I can't remember anything else he did apart from Family Fortunes! I guess everyone else has repressed the rest of his career too. Fair play to the guy though for building a career based on a rather tepid impersonation of Mavis Riley...

He used to have a partner called Dustin Gee and they had a sketch show in the late 70's, they used to do quips and Dustin Gee used to play Vera Duckworth and Les used to do Mavis, it was pretty funny at the time and lets face it people still remember it now, so that can't be bad

cos that character has been in a popular programme for years and years and it was a popular phrase the character said (as I recall)
generally most impressions can only last for so long, especially when the character is famous....the audience want up to date impressions.

he and dustin gee used to be on russ abbotts mad house and they used to impersonate mavis riley and vera duckworth,think it is only remembered cos dustin gee died not long after series!
