...trying far too hard at every point to be like the original 1970's film. The Superman mythos has moved on since then, becoming more sophisticated and subtle. The relaunch of the comic in the 1980's set the stage for Lois & Clark, Superman the Animated Series, and of course Smallville. In every one of these recent incarnations, Clark represents the real person and he is consequently portrayed as a likable, competent guy in his own right who gains Lois' friendship and admiration without super-powers. The Superman personna functions to allow Clark to help people with his powers while protecting his personal life (and thereby his loved ones).

This all is relevant because the Clark in Superman Returns is the same impossibly meek character people will remember from Christopher Reeve's portrayal. Can anyone buy that the movie version of Clark is a successful reporter at a major newspaper? The movie left me wondering what is the point of Superman even being Clark? Brandon Routh to his credit makes Superman look amazingly sexy and cool, but Clark should be the one Lois takes home at the end of the day (not a spoiler, just a figure of speech). Fans of the TV shows may find it hard to relate to the film Superman.

Anyway, the leads are very solid actors but their youth (since the characters should both be about 40) was very distracting for me. Re-using Brando's image and voice was lazy and slightly obscene. Copying dialogue word-for-word from the Donner film in serious moments was just appalling, although it would have worked for a few lighter moments. The central plot had wonderful potential but was harmed by some loose ends and a few 'Hollywood blockbuster roller-coaster ride' moments which belie the otherwise somber tone of the film.

I'm glad I went to see this opening night just for the spectacle of Superman in action. Do not go, however, expecting a seamless movie on par with X2 and Batman Begins.
