Usually, you can hear it. The strings tend to be difficult to tune correctly and will snap with the slightest turn of the tuning pegs. But heres something you can try. Carefully remove your strings, boil a pot of water and place them in it for a few minutes. The boiling water will remove all the dirt, sweat and grease that always builds up. Try it. When you replace the strings, your guitar will have a trebly, "bright" quality to them. I can't explain the sound, you just have to try it. And its free! No need to buy a replacement set just yet.

they sound dull or flat sounding. Normally i change the strings once a month. You can extend the strings life by cleaning them . Some people have took strings off and cleaned them.. i think by boiling them. Although i just clean my strings on the guitar. Also clean the Frets, fret board and the rest of the guitar, to have a good sound.

your strings have a certain amount of action, when you start loosing the action, usually it will be harder to keep your guitar in tune. I replace mine about every month just to make sure. There are different strings available, dont be afraid to check out different kinds to see what types of sounds you can get from them.

YOU SHOULD CHANGE YOUR STRINGS WHEN THE TONE BECOMES DULL.COMPARE THE SOUND OF NEW STRINGS AGAINST THOSE WHICH HAVE BEEN ON FOR A WHILE.IF YOU RUN YOUR FINGER ALONG THE UNDERSIDE OF THE STRING YOU WILL FEEL RIDGES WHERE THE STRINGS CROSS THE FRETS.

If you play regularly, I'd recommend once per month. My band plays about 4-5 shows per month so I change strings every week.
