I really can't give an example of a band because that would get the answers off a tangent arguing over the popularity of a band. Anyhow, I would say a band like KISS or the Rolling Stones would be a mega-band.

There is no such thing as a lesser-known Beatle. They were all Super Stars in their time. They will always be a part of history. A front man of a band with modest success? Oh yea that guy who sang with that band I can't remember their name.

The answer depends on what are you looking for? If you are satisfied with the music and the atmosphere of the more modest band, and you feel your talents are being used the way you wanted, that is where you need to be.

If you were in a mega-band and didn't want all the extra attention, and felt your talents were being wasted or misdirected, how could that be better? Several artists in the mega-bands have tried to get out because of that, and some have thrived on it.
