yes you can... you can use stealth settings... try to go invisible first... then you right click the ym id of the person you dont want to talk to... right click the ym id then set it to permanently offline... then go online... the person wouldn't know that you are online... ^_^...

If yahoo messenger is the case, so the answer would be No! it is not possible.
But:
you can either make more than one profiles with different names under your main Id, then group your frineds in your contact list ( for instance , group A for boys, group B for girls and ... ), now you can assing different profiles to different groups and be available for one group and busy for the other one. As far as i remember you can have up to 5 profiles under your main id,
or
you can sign up for sifferent account with new ids and logging to all of them at the time. Yes, you need a piece of software to crack yahoo messanger if you want to have more than one at the time. Cracking yahoo mesenger is not a big deal at all.

I don't know about appearing busy, but in yahoo messenger; you can do an invisible and then make yourself visible to only those you chose too. In my opinion that's even better because those you want to appear "busy" too won't even know your on.
