The Exorcist. Not only did Dick Smith pioneer some incredible special effects in that movie, but the whole concept of a young girl (typically associated with purity) being fused with pure evil added a psychological aspect to the horror that we rarely see in today's films. This, coupled with the young priest's own issues concerning his faith and his mother, the fear of the unknown, and the supernatural aspect of the plot, made the Exorcist a truly haunting movie.
Second runner up was the Barney and Friends Halloween Special. The horror... the HORROR.

I haven't seen many, but among the ones I've seen, I tink The Ring was the sariest, followed by The Exorcist. "What lies beneath" is my fav horror movie, though- awesome sound effects!

For me, "Psycho" is the scariest. "Silence of the Lambs" and "Omen" rank up there as well.
