Your pores are not little valves that open or close. They are made of ducts that secrete oils. They sometimes become clogged when you do not make the extra effort for regular maintenance of your face. You can do great facials at home. Oily skin requires more work than normal skin or dry. The trick is keeping the skin clean of oils on the surface that clog your pores and then you won't get blackheads.

See a dermetologist. I will enclose my article on this subject. *********************************** Pimples By Minootoo There are many reasons for it. To name a few: 1. Hormonal imbalance 2. Infected hair follicle. 3. Infected oil sack. If a person is lucky it will be a painful bump and it will go away after few days. In many cases it develops in to an infectious hair boil. At the height of the infection it has ugly looks, puss flowing and it is very painful. Ultimately skin breaks and leave dent or a hole on the facial surface. The dent is cause because the bacteria eat up the cologne (baby fat that gives glow to the skin). Can it be avoid for sure? May be, healthy living and good habits and lots of luck can help some. Anti-biotic are given in rear case to prevent infection (low dose prolong treatment). But doctor are very reluctant to use this, the side effects and build up of the immunity to the bacteria is the main reason.

It's a myth that you can open and close your pores - the only way to close them is to block them up (with a zit!) and you don't want that.
Try to wash with oatmeal soap, and apply a 5% (not 10%) benzoyl peroxide product once a day. You can use Witch Hazel (found in any store that sells rubbing alcohol) as a mild astringent for oily times in between. It's worked miracles for me!
Good Luck!

I had very large open pores on my face and I have been using a product called Gamma Hydroxy by Skin Doctors and it really seems to be working. It's quite expensive at £40 a pot, but it's said to have to equivalent effect of a chemical peel, but works gradually.

Use a hot hot flannel to open the pores up, then use an apricot shell based skin cleanser, use a hot flannel again to clean the cleanser off. Your skin will feel supple, but tight.

Clinique do a good pore refiner, and you can wear it underneath or over make up. It instantly shrinks your pores.

One thing that I read in a Magazine was to use Hydrin Peroxide as a toner. Just use it after you wash your face with a cotton ball. It helped me
