There is an island in the center of the Snake River near a little town called Farewell Bend that is fabulous. It's just a tiny little island, no buildings on it, no people until you arrive. In the summer, we used to swim out to the island and sit on the sandy beach and play in the river. We'd carry food out in a plastic cooler (they float!), eat and drink and bask in the sun with our very best friends. No one bothers you because you can't get there unless you have a boat (this part of the Snake is seldom boated in) or are willing to swim out.
It's one of my favorite memories, that island. It had shells (yes! in a river!), warm white sand, cool clear water and all of my favorite people.
