Because these women are so confident about who they are. And they are very strong. Also they are iconic, and their talent spans so many years.

Hmmm...well, they don't, at least not most of them. I think they are all talented, for various reasons, but as far as music goes I only really like Madonna. And that is limited to her work between the late 80s and 90s. She lost me after Ray of Light.

Each artist you mentioned has also supported gay rights, which is why the establishment (i.e., gay activists) supports them. You could just as easily toss in Tori Amos or any number of artists that sing about longing, loss and repression.

I find it extremely ironic (in light of this question) that my very heterosexual father likes Streisand, Midler and Cher, and only has a passing interest in Madonna. The reverse is true for me.

Musical taste has no natural relationship to sexuality, only to culture. These artists simply took advantage of a market, good capitalists that they are.

I never could stand MechaStreisand or Madonna. Cher was cool for who she is and how she tries to treat people. Bette Midler is just a really good actor and singer. She always tries to make movies that have a valid point to them not just some piece of crap that others do. I really started liking Midler after "Beaches" and "For the Boys". Both very good movies, of course you can't forget "First Wives Club" as a third good movie.

Streisand's got a gay son; Midler started her career singing in gay bath houses; Cher's the coolest woman on the planet (and has a gay daughter); Madonna's got a gay brother.

I don't like everything that all of these women do, but I appreciate their respective talents and - for all but Streisand, maybe - their unabashed public support of diversity & their acknowledgment of their gay audiences.

Soo humorous you're saying this. i'm 14 and that i'm the biggest Abba and Cher fan, yet not lots for Madonna yet I do like a number of her songs. The others i've got by no ability heard approximately them.

I can't possibly say, but as a bisexual man, I can't stand any of them other than Madonna, and I only like her because I like her music. If she were the same person, but made music like Streisand, I couldn't stand her.

Other than possibly Cher, the other three might make a walk on the other side a bit less distasteful, know what I mean?

Do they? I think that's mostly a stereotype. Sure, some gay men like them, but not all. It depends on the person more than anything.

We idolize these women because of their confidence to be who they are, and how they are always changing, and because these women make their own rules instead of following the rules of a society.

Because they all sympathize with gay issues they have a large following among traditional gay culture.
