His mother's name was Donna & she passed away last December. I do like the name, but I do feel that although it's a pretty name (& she was a beautiful lady-inside & out) I think it's a bit outdated. I just can't see myself called a small child Donna. Any comments on the name, or suggestions of names similar to Donna? How do I approach this subject with him?

The suggestions for middle name is good. Another alternative to make her name sound more "modern" might be to take a variation on Donna. How about Donnica- actually from the ancient Latin meaning the same as Donna? Or Donatella- Italian for beautiful gift? It rings of a more "original" name. Other variations (my own invention): Donya, Doña, Donadia, Donita, Doniella, Donaya- the possibilities are endless. Yet, you can still tell your little girl she was named after someone very special...her grandmother!

Tell him you completely support him and would LOVE to have Donna as the middle name as a tribute to his mother. I think Donna would make a beautiful middle name with a more contemporary first name, you aren't replacing his mother so having the child with the EXACT same name, first and last, is a bit much but the middle name is a great way to pay tribute to this beautiful woman.

Either you are alright with it or not but if you name her Donna, she will grow into the name and one day you will wonder how you could have ever considered another name because she wares the name so well. No matter what name you choose she will create beauty to that name! I personally love the name Donna very much. Trust me though the baby will grow into that name perfectly. Do not fret over such trivialities, the baby will bring plenty more after she is born, trust me on this one too.

You could use it as a middle name or give the child another middle name and Donna as her first, then you could call her by the middle name. I personally like Donna as that is the name of my favorite sister-in-law.

well your right about donna being outdated but it is still a beautiful name. I would just talk to him and you guyz could like have the middle name donna. Or you could come up with another name that was meaningful to his mother or something.

Agree on a different first name and use Donna as the middle name.

Since you like the name and you were very fond of the lady herself I say name the baby Donna. Your daughter didn't have a chance to meet her grandmother and this would be a great tribute. I like the name Donna.

How about using Dawn instead? Or like others have suggested simply making her middle name Donna. Tell him how much you care about his mother and that you would love to give your daughter her name, but it seems a bit outdated but you would be happy to compromise on it as a middle name or by shortening it or refining it to be more trendy.

You could explain that this baby needs it's own identity and not that of someone else, no matter how good a person she was.

Perhaps you could use Donna as a middle name as a compromise?
