You should contact a publishing company and ask them how they like stories to be submitted. They have a certain format that needs to be followed. Also, you probably need to have an agent, or know someone in the publishing biz to get them to really pay attention to your script.

Publishing companies also have different divisions. You need to find out who heads up the genre you have written in i.e. fiction, sci-fi, biography etc. If your script ends up in the wrong place, it will probably get dropped.

If it is really what you want to do, you need to research hard core and find out everything there is to know about publishing. research each company you submit your book to. Try to find out names and phone numbers. Call people directly and be able to sound professional and like you know what you are talking about. Don't be obnoxious, but be assertive and nice. It is all about networking. Good luck

Go to a bookstore and purchase the newest copy of The Writer's Market. It gives invaluable advice about publishing. You probably won't be able to get a book published at first; you may have to get some prestige as a good writer before that can happen. The Writer's Market is pretty pricey, but it can be well worth it. If you buy it near the end of the year, then it's cheaper, becuase bookstores are making way for the newest editions with updated information.

Also, don't be ashamed to get something published, and only get copies of what it was published in at first as payment. A lot of people get that. Also, check out Stephen King's: On Writing - A Memoir of the Craft. It has some good advice for aspiring authors.

Call a publisher out of a major city. Find out what they accept and expect. Find a publisher who is comparable to what you write. In other words, do you really want your children's book published by a sci-fi company? Find out their guidelines and act accordingly. Some people suggest an agent, but they cost money; something you may not have when you first start out. Your best bet would probably be to stick your neck out and make your own connections. Good luck!

the market is very competitive right now so if u try self publishing u might do alot better, because after u sell enough copies word will get around to a big publishing house who may become interested in you and if not you r keeping all your profit for yourself.
